"BACK HOME" 2

'This is like my house.'

EDWIN:
I built my house in Dominica by myself and with God in heaven. Only help I had was putting the roof on. It was board and posts, only one storey. It took 6 months to build it as I had other little jobs to do. I had three rooms and a kitchen. My wife and children were there, I was in England but went back to build it. (I had a small place already).
I worked here as a carpenter. After working at the Cumberland Hotel, I worked on the Time's Newspaper office. I paid for my wife to come over in 1963. She left the children with her mother. She preferred 'Back Home' so I sent her back. I sent money over to maintain her and the children. And every letter I sent her, I said, 'Let no man cast asunder.'

ALICIA: We had a one bedroom house in Grenada. We had sun, seaside, everybody was as one. We lived as a family; neighbours, we helped each other and we didn't have to lock a place to go out. We tell neighbours that we go out. We share what we have together. We wasn't in luxury but we were happy.
