LANDLORDS

CHARLIE: There are always two sides to the story.
No Irish No Blacks No Dogs
We couldn't get accommodation.

We used to live in some of the Rachman properties in the Powis Square area......because in those days we couldn't get accommodation.

He was a Blessing really.
There was no landlord protection in those days. If you didn't pay your rent you could get kicked out.

Ernest shows where he livedErnest
ERNEST:
I came when I was 9 years old to join my mum in Kensal. It was one room rented from Mr Mac, the landlord, a Jamaican man, a young landlord. He offered my mum that she can stay for free if she has sex with him. She said NO.

ALICIA:
I rented a room 182 Ashmore Road W9. Horrible accommodation shared with my husband.

Mr Mac a Jamaican was the landlord.  He had a dog that was his saviour. He and his brother had 2 houses.
The rent was £5 a week. and it was a furnished room.
A bed, a pair of curtains, a pillow, a sink, and a paraffin heater. I could boil a kettle on it.  No rug only lino. Five other tenants shared a kitchen with one cooker.
I wanted to pay extra money for extra heating. Mr Mac said NO!
I got sick and someone from the council? came to look at the place and the person said,
"I wouldn't even let my dog live here."
Mr Mac said,
"You will have to go." I moved out for ill health.
I moved to West Ken with my husband. It was a new place I was the first person living there. It was 'Paradise'. I move in and slept on the floor with some blanket and things. I then worked hard to get the furniture. I had 5 different jobs at the same time. One year before my husband and I were made redundant we bought a house.

Ripply tals about RachmanRipply
RIPPLY:
My father had a dispute with the landlord Rachman. The door banged open. Rachman barged in. He backed off. My father wouldn't take this kind of behaviour.
